Hedges make or break curb appeal

The lawn can be perfect and the yard still looks wild if the hedges are shaggy. Our hedge and shrub trimming keeps everything shaped, healthy, and off the house — on a schedule matched to how fast each plant grows, not a one-size-fits-all hack-back.

Shaped, not scalped

Good trimming keeps the plant's natural shape and lets light reach the lower branches, so hedges stay full from top to bottom. Bad trimming — shearing everything into boxes at the wrong time — leaves brown, woody plants that never recover. We trim with the plant's growth habit in mind and clean up every clipping.

Timing by plant, not by calendar

Spring-flowering shrubs get trimmed after they bloom, or you cut off next year's flowers. Fast growers like viburnum and podocarpus may need three or four shapings a year in Orlando's long growing season. Slow growers need one careful pass. We set the schedule per plant when we quote.

How It Works

  1. Free quote and plant walk. We walk your property, identify your shrubs and hedges, and note which are overgrown, which are healthy, and which need renovation instead of a trim.
  2. A schedule per plant. Fast growers get three to four shapings a year; spring bloomers get trimmed after flowering; slow growers get one careful pass. One quote covers the year's plan.
  3. Shape with the plant's habit. We trim to each plant's natural form — slightly narrower at the top so light reaches the lower branches. No flat-topped boxes that brown out from the inside.
  4. Clearance check every visit. Shrubs get cut back from siding, windows, rooflines, and walkways. Plants touching the house trap moisture and invite pests — we keep a healthy gap.
  5. Full cleanup, every time. Every clipping gets raked, blown, and hauled away. Your lawn, beds, and driveway look untouched except for the sharp hedges.

Orlando's fast growers

Our long growing season is a blessing and a curse for hedges. Viburnum and podocarpus — the backbone of Orlando privacy hedges — can push a foot or more of growth between spring and fall. Ixora and hibiscus grow fast and bloom on new wood, so they actually want regular shaping. Left alone for a year, these plants swallow walkways and windows.

That is why hedge care here is a schedule, not an event. Three to four shapings a year keeps fast growers crisp without ever letting them get wild. One aggressive annual hack-back stresses the plant and looks terrible for months — steady light shaping looks better and the plants stay healthier.

Storm-season prep

Hurricane season runs June through November, and overgrown shrubs are a liability: weak, top-heavy branches break in high wind, and limbs rubbing the roof damage shingles. A pre-season trim — late May into June — thins canopies so wind passes through instead of pushing the plant over, and clears everything away from the roofline. It is cheap insurance against the kind of damage that costs real money.

Renovation: saving overgrown shrubs

Hedges that have been neglected for years often can be saved — but not with one brutal cut. Renovation pruning works over a season or two: we cut back in stages, letting the plant push new growth from lower branches before taking more. Some plants respond beautifully (viburnum, ixora); some never recover from years of neglect (old boxwood stumps with no green left). We will tell you honestly which ones are worth saving before you spend anything.

Off the house, off the walk

Shrubs rubbing the siding trap moisture and invite pests; branches over the walkway snag visitors. Every visit includes clearance checks — plants stay a healthy distance from the house, windows stay visible, and walkways stay clear. Add it to your mowing plan and never think about it.

Palm pruning: what we do and don't do

Orlando yards have palms, and palms need their own care: removing dead fronds, spent seed pods, and loose boots. We handle small palms — sago, pygmy date, and young ornamentals — as part of shrub visits, cutting cleanly at the trunk without damaging the crown.

What we do not do: tall palms. Anything that needs a ladder beyond a step stool, a pole saw near power lines, or climbing equipment belongs to a licensed tree service. Over-pruned palms — the “hurricane cut” that strips everything but a tuft — starve the tree and we will not do it. If your tall palms need work, we will say so and point you to the right kind of pro.

Should shrubs be fertilized?

Lightly, and at the right time. Most established Orlando shrubs do fine with a slow-release feeding in spring as new growth starts — the same rhythm as the lawn. Heavy feeding pushes weak, floppy growth that needs more trimming, which defeats the purpose.

Newly planted shrubs are the exception: they benefit from feeding through their first year while roots establish. Flowering shrubs like ixora and hibiscus are hungrier than foliage hedges and appreciate a bloom-supporting feed. We fold shrub feeding into the plan when the plants actually need it — not as an automatic upsell.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do hedges need trimming in Orlando?

Fast-growing hedges need shaping three to four times a year here. Slower shrubs are fine with one or two passes.

Can you fix overgrown hedges?

Often yes, with careful renovation pruning over a season or two. Some plants won't recover from years of neglect — we'll tell you honestly which yours are.

Do you haul away the trimmings?

Yes. Every trimming visit includes full cleanup and haul-off. Nothing left in piles on the lawn.

Will trimming hurt my flowering shrubs?

Not when timed right. Spring bloomers get trimmed after they flower; summer bloomers get shaped before bud season. Timing by plant is the whole point.

Can you shape hedges into specific forms?

Yes — clean natural shapes, privacy screens, and classic forms. We shape with the plant's health first, so the form lasts instead of browning out.

My shrubs touch the house. Is that a problem?

Yes. Plants against siding trap moisture, invite pests, and can damage paint and stucco. We cut everything back to a healthy clearance on every visit.

Should I trim before hurricane season?

Yes — a late spring trim thins canopies so wind passes through and clears limbs from the roofline. It is the best cheap storm prep for your landscaping.

Do you trim trees too?

We handle small ornamental trees and low limbs as part of shrub care. Large tree work and anything near power lines needs a licensed tree service — we will tell you when a job is beyond hand tools.

Do you trim palm trees?

Small ornamental palms, yes — dead fronds and seed pods, cut cleanly. Tall palms that need ladders or pole saws belong to a tree service, and we will tell you when that is the case.
